What is the best free way to protect PC from virus and malwares?

There are 2 ways malware can be implanted in your system:
  1. External Media
  2. Internet
So to protect ourself we have to cover these two aspects.
For further explanation you must know this. There are two kind malwares:
  1. Zero Day Malware - The one which are made within the last 24 hour time span.
  2. Old One (These are easy to tackle.)
For most of the time the malware you will be getting through External Media would be way too old so basically every free antivirus can tackle them.
Now comes the Internet since the viruses from internet are mostly Zero Day. Even from internet there are various ways through which a virus can enter your PC:
  1. Websites implantimg script which aren't malicious but will act as an intermediate for them to enter.
  2. Malwares in file you are downloading from torrent or some untrusted sources.
There is no way you can isolate your system from virus but you can take some preventive measures like not visiting untrustworthy website or Downloading cracks, keygen and other stuff in order to get premium version of some softwares.
& here are some list of software which might help you to protect your system.
Chrome Extensions:
  1. WOT - Web of Trust (It will warn you if you will be opening a website which isn't trusted by other people around the globe)
  2. uBlock(Ad-Blocker) - It helps as it stop prompt windows from opening which sometimes are malicious websites.
  3. Aira Web Protection - Block malicious links & this is quite good. You xan try the avast one too you can find it in chrome store.
Free Antivirus:
  1. Avast Free Antivirus
  2. Avira (Not that goot in my opinion)
  3. 360 Total Security - It is quote good but there something allegations againt this of stealing your personal data, so do some google on thsi before using it.
  4. Windows Defender - This one is quite good i myself have been using this from quite some time, but with this it would be better using a second opinion scanner.
Some Additional Tools:
  1. K9 Web Protection - This thing rocks literally awesome in blocking malicious website.
  2. MalwareBytes Free - There is free edition of MalwareBytes which can be used as a second opinion scanner. I would suggest you to scan on weelly basis from this.
  3. EMSISOFT Emergency Kit - This one too is a second opinion scanner & The best i would say.
To tackle Zero Day Malware you need an antivirus with real time cloud scanning which uses there cloud to scan the suspicious file, In free antivirus avast do have this.
